The Great Pyrenee

The Great Pyrenees dog is a majestic white creature, tall and strong, capable of treading great distances. Descended from an ancestral mountain dog, the Great Pyrenees have herded sheep in the mountains of Europe for millennia.

As a result, these dogs, despite being loyal, have been termed “aloof” or “independent,” since they were once used to being alone for weeks at a time but make excellent watch dogs. While they typically aren’t house dogs, they can be kept inside as long as they have access to a gated area to run around. They also can shed much of their coat during the summer. As such large dogs, it is imperative that they are run for at least a few hours daily.

Many mountain dogs suffer from a stomach condition called bloat, which is a twisting of the stomach resulting from eating too much. These large animals should only eat two small meals daily, otherwise they may feel the repercussions of this condition, which include severe pain, and possibly death if left alone.
